Responsibilities

THIS ROLE HAS A STARTING SALARY OF £10,114 PER ANNUM PER ANNUM, BASED ON A 15 HOUR WORKING WEEK. THE FULL TIME EQUIVALENT SALARY IS £24,275 PER ANNUM.

An exciting opportunity is available to join the small and friendly team at the Basingstoke Canal Centre in Mytchett as a Storekeeper/Maintenance Operative. The centre sits at the heart of the Basingstoke Canal, offering a wide range of visitor facilities including campsite, boat hire, function room, shop, children’s play and seasonal events.
The role will be based on site, helping to keep everything safe and running smoothly. Work pattern can be discussed with the successful candidate, with a need for occasional out of hours support or flexibility with working hours throughout the week to support the operation of the Centre.
If working at a beautiful waterside setting and getting ‘hands on’ to help a popular visitor site reach its potential sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you!

ABOUT THE ROLE

You can expect each day to have variety, but an average day could involve:

  • Liaising with the visitor team and canal rangers
  • Emptying the bins and undertaking checks of the grounds
  • Opening the swing bridge for visitors
  • Undertaking health and safety checks
  • Carrying out grounds maintenance tasks in line with the season (such as strimming or leaf blowing)
  • Helping with events or coordinating with contractors

Although this is a practical role (training provided), you will also be a visible presence, so being a friendly face and able to deliver great customer service to visitors and campsite users is a must. As a key member of a small team, you’ll need to be adaptable with a flexible approach so you can best support the needs of the centre. Your strong organisational skills will ensure you keep effective records and that relevant health and safety arrangements are in place to meet our statutory obligations.
