JOB SUMMARY

Lead strategic vision: Working regularly with the Executive Leadership Team to set the strategic direction for the Department. This will include working closely with the Secretary of State, ensuring we are identifying and acting on the future challenges which will determine how the transport system supports the economy and society.
Ensure effective delivery: ensure effective, pacey delivery of DfT’s contribution to the Government’s missions, including through fiscal events and working in partnership with colleagues across government.
Champion innovation and foresight: Anticipate the future of transport and embed strategic thinking across the Department through thought leadership, stakeholder engagement, and horizon scanning.
Deliver outstanding support for ministers: oversee the Private Office function, ensuring ministers are supported with precision and insight, to deliver their agenda across government.

YOU WILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO SHOW, THROUGH YOUR APPLICATION, THAT YOU HAVE THE PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, BREADTH OF EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL QUALITIES FOR THIS POST, AS WELL AS THE LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO SUCCEED AT DIRECTOR LEVEL IN THE SENIOR CIVIL SERVICE.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their experience and skills against the following essential criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and oversee strategy in a complex environment to drive measurable, system-wide outcomes across decentralised organisations.
  • Proven experience at a senior level of taking an effective whole system approach to complex, dynamic issues; actively building cross-sector networks internally and externally, breaking down barriers to deliver impactful outcomes, and bringing together colleagues across a complex, distributed system.
  • Strong experience of leading, motivating and developing high-performing, multi-disciplinary and inclusive teams ensuring morale and motivation are maintained amidst change and ambiguity.
  • Ability to deliver on challenging and evolving goals, without always direct levers for change, and creating an effective evidence base to take complex decisions in uncertain environments,
  • Ability to communicate and influence senior level stakeholders, including ministers, on complex and varied areas whilst commanding the confidence and trust of key partners.
