STREETCAR TECH I (preventative maintenance mechanic) Job Summary Salary $25.05 hourly Streetcar Tech I is responsible for performing maintenance, repair, and inspection tasks on streetcars and light rail vehicles to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. This position requires a entry level technician who, under the supervision, can diagnose mechanical issues, perform preventive maintenance, and repair or replace parts and systems as necessary. This position performs all required preventive maintenance inspections, check defect reports and creates corresponding work requests, prepares and maintains vehicle and facility inspection records and reports and work orders, make routine mechanical repairs and adjustments, such as but not limited to defective lights, body damage, interior damage, and operating defects. The Streetcar Tech I plays a key role in minimizing downtime and ensuring the safety and reliability of the streetcar fleet and systems. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position. * Perform supervised diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic propulsion systems. * Perform supervised diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic destination PA systems, electronic displays, and other electronic systems typically found in transit vehicles * Perform thorough preventative maintenance inspections in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines; make routine mechanical repairs and adjustments * Troubleshoot systems and locate causes of electrical, electronic, and mechanical problems. * Perform supervised diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of track, switch, TWC, and TPSS * Use test equipment, typical shop tools, torque wrenches, multimeter, power supplies, oscilloscope, and portable test units. * Check and inspect the condition of Streetcars; report and repair defects such as defective lights, body damage, interior damage, and operating defects. * Maintain cleanliness and safety of shop area and work vehicles. * Tag and document defect parts. * Perform vehicle recovery duties including: towing/pushing disabled vehicles, assisting with re-railing of cars, as necessary, moving cars around the yard and shop. * Clean exterior of streetcars by handwashing and steam cleaning, using a variety of approved solvents, soaps, cleaning chemicals, and tools. * Check and replenish consumables such as wiper fluid and sand. * Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports. * Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position. * Other duties as assigned.   JOB REQUIREMENTS   * High School diploma or General Equivalent Degree. * Experience in maintaining, repairing, troubleshooting, and overhauling electrical and mechanical systems * Experience in the diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic propulsion systems * Knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles, repair methods, standards, and practices * Knowledge of test equipment and tools needed in the repair, maintenance, and installation of mechanical, electronic,  and electrical systems and equipment. * Strong knowledge of electronics including, digital and analog systems * Knowledge of general shop safety procedures * Skill communicating orally and in writing. * Skill in performing maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and safety/preventive maintenance inspections * Skill in implementing preventive maintenance and safety inspection procedures * Skill in using test and shop equipment and tools, parts, and supply manuals * Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of business * Skill in the use of electronic schematics, portable test units, and diagnostic software * Ability to read, understand, and apply technical information from service manuals * Ability to read and follow verbal and written directions; ability to read, understand, and apply technical information found in repair manuals, service change bulletins, and applicable technical documents, including parts and supply manuals * Ability to operate a computer and familiarity with MS Office products and maintenance information systems * Ability to obtain and maintain a Streetcar Yard Operation certification Preferences: * Streetcar elated experience, Programmable Logic Controller system experience, training, and certifications preferred. * Experience in the diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of Streetcar braking system, hydraulic units, and high voltage systems preferred. * Experience in the diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of fare electronic destination signage, PA systems, electronic displays, and other electronic systems typically found in transit vehicles.   PRE- EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS   * Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review. * No criminal record within the last 7 years * Less than 2 points on your driving record, and no infractions in the past 12 months * Must have a valid drivers license  * Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position. * Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis. * Must be 20 years of age or older * Must have a high school diploma or GED * Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid DOT medical card post job offer   Any major moving violations, previous convictions, or pending misdemeanor or felony charges for distribution of illegal substances, violent crimes, or lewd acts are reviewed by management for approval.   PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job. * Regularly lift weight up to 75 pounds to a height of up to 56 inches. * Regularly carry weight up to 75 pounds to a distance up to 100 feet. * Regularly push/pull up to 50 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet. * Regularly grasp or squeeze with forces up to 40 pounds. * Regularly ascend and descend a step ladder with up to 25 pounds. Frequently climb on/off equipment. * Work in a confined access/space environment with a height of 12 inches and a width of 24 inches. * Regularly kneel, bend, squat while transferring up to 25 pounds of weight. * Regularly sit and stand for an extended period. * Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to 1 mile. * Regularly lay on back for extended periods of time. * Regularly reach overhead while holding tools. * Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis. * Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind. * Must be able to work in a safety sensitive work environment. * Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position. * Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position. WORKING CONDITIONS * Inside and outside regularly, and exposed to heat, cold, humidity, and rain. * The possibility of falls from working on and around slippery surfaces. * Possibility of body injuries such as sprains, fractures, deep cuts, or loss of body members. * Possibility of injury to the body caused by burns or electrical shock. * Will work from ladders, platforms, or other equipment from 4 to 12 feet above floor or ground level. * Will work in confined or cramped positions and be required to assume awkward or strained positions. * Will work near moving machinery and power tools. * Exposed to intermittent or continued loud noises caused by machinery and other workers. * Frequent sustained exposure to fumes and gases i.e. carbon monoxide. May require wearing of self-contained breathing apparatus. * · Frequent exposure to noxious odors such as garbage trucks, animal control trucks, septic tank cleaning trucks, sewage line cleaning trucks, etc. * The possibility of severe electrical shock causing temporary respiratory and circulatory disturbance. * Occasionally exposed to infections caused by microorganisms. *  Will work eight to 10 hour shifts and may be required to work holidays and overtime. EVALUATION CRITERIA Interpersonal Relations: Employees work closely with Techs as a means of on-the-job training. The worker also talks with parts persons to obtain parts, and may occasionally talk with other staff to determine what problems the driver may be experiencing with equipment or vehicle. In the absence of a supervisor,  talk with suppliers to make inquiries on the needed parts with approval from Tech II or Tech III. Supervision Given and Received: Receives written work orders and detailed oral instructions from a Tech III, and/or supervisor(s). Work is reviewed by the supervisor upon completion, for quality of workmanship.
