QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 3–5 years of experience in the structural design of transmission line structures, preferably within the South African and UK power sector.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software: PLS-CADD, TOWER, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000.
  • Strong understanding of wind loading, conductor tensioning, and foundation interaction, with consideration for local terrain and climate conditions.
  • Familiarity with Eskom grid codes, TRMSCAAC1, and SANS 10100.
  • Pr. Eng or Pr. Tech Eng registration with ECSA, or actively working towards registration.
Responsibilities

KEY ROLE:

WSP Africa Power and Energy teams is seeking an experienced Structural Design Engineer to join the Power and Energy team. The role involves the design and analysis of overhead transmission line structures, including steel lattice towers and monopoles, for voltages ranging from 33kV to 400kV. The successful candidate will contribute to both South African and UK-based transmission projects, ensuring compliance with local and international standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and analyze transmission structures in accordance with South African standards (e.g., Eskom TRMSCAAC1, SANS, CP TSSTAN 116) and international codes (e.g., IEC 60826, BS EN 50341, Eurocodes).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, electrical, geotechnical) to deliver integrated and site-appropriate design solutions.
  • Conduct structural assessments and recommend reinforcement or replacement strategies for existing infrastructure.
  • Prepare detailed design documentation, technical reports, and drawings for submission to regulatory bodies and clients.
  • Provide technical input and cost estimation support during tendering and procurement processes.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, and authorities (e.g., NERSA, Eskom, UK grid operators) to ensure project compliance and success.
