Production fitting operations in fabrication shop. Components to fit/fabricate include but are not limited to structural parts, deck plates, bulkheads and foundations using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding Pulse (GMAW-P) processes.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS
Candidates must be an upcoming graduate or recent graduate from Tidewater Tech
The selected candidate must be able to exercise and exhibit the following competencies:
- Fabricating and fitting metal components and structures to precise specifications.
- Fabricate, assemble, and install materials such as beams, channels, angles and plates.
- Working with a wide range of materials, including steel, stainless and aluminum.
- Being skilled in metalworking techniques such as welding, cutting, grinding, and shaping of materials.
- Must be able to read and derive measurements, dimensions and quantity of material needed to fabricate structure.
- Reading blueprints, section and plan drawings, and weld symbols.
- Use of industry tools and equipment, and install, use, and remove stop plates, dogs, strong backs and pad eyes.
- Use in shop equipment such as iron worker, break press and plate roller.
- Must be able to work within a team-based environment to accomplish all aspects of fabrication.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & SKILLS
- Fabricate components based on NAVSEA drawing requirements with minimum direction given.
- Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Ability to pass a hands-on welding practical test on SMAW, FCAW and GMAW-P fillet weld by way of a VT NDT
- Ability to pass an oxy-fuel torch test consistent of set up, cutting, and beveling.
- Ablility to understand, read and interpret basic welding symbols based on the requirements of Military Standard 22-D.
- Have working knowledge of Military Standard 1688 and Military Standard 1689.
- Ability to interpret and understand NAVSEA drawings/blueprints.
- Good communication and good interpersonal skills.
- Possess basic reading, writing and mathematical skills.
- Previous experience in use of overhead cranes.
- Previous experience in shop equipment such as iron worker, break press and plate roller.Ability to work weekends and a variety of shifts as needed.
