OPPORTUNITY

MacEwan University is seeking a Student Advisor/Recruiter for a full-time continuing opportunity with our kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre. Reporting to the Manager, and utilizing Indigenous based experience and knowledge, you will initiate, plan, and organize recruitment, engagement, and retention activities for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students and their families. With your knowledge of resources and supports for Indigenous students, including financial supports, you will support the cultural adjustment of Indigenous students into MacEwan University and collaborate with the greater University community to provide transition support services, building strong connections with students, faculty, staff and the Indigenous community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and implementing student support and success programs;
  • Providing direct, personal and referral services to promote individual growth and manage personal concerns that may affect one’s ability to function optimally in the post-secondary environment;
  • Providing career planning and educational advice in a variety of formats, which includes assisting students in exploring educational options, making realistic academic and life goals, and consulting on programs, courses, academic policies, admissions, and registration;
  • Providing learning support, like developing effective study plans and exploring possible learning barriers and accommodation;
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to address barriers, resolve issues, improve recruitment and retention, and encourage culturally sensitive programming, policies, and events;
  • Supporting the execution of the University’s recruitment strategy and enrolment goals, specializing in the enrollment of prospective First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students;
  • Promoting MacEwan University programs, services, and student life, including the pimâcihisowin Program (pMP), at various recruitment events, like education and career fairs, social networks, classroom/school presentations, information sessions and Indigenous community events;
  • Cultivating positive relationships with prospective students, their families, and communities by providing information, responding to inquiries, and traveling to Indigenous communities and events;
  • Conducting campus tours for potential students, their families, and community members;
  • Establishing an annual recruitment schedule that includes recruitment-related events and independent visits, and preparing a recruitment operation and travel budget;
  • Compiling data and preparing monthly reports on recruitment initiatives for Indigenous students;
  • Establishing and maintaining safe spaces for students that are reflective of Indigenous culture and knowledge;
  • Mentoring the Indigenous Student Club according to Student Association guidelines and Indigenous principles of engagement;
  • Facilitating and participating in events celebrating Indigenous knowledge, culture, and heritage at MacEwan and in the broader Indigenous community; and
  • Fostering relationships with funders and alumni as a means of supporting Indigenous recruitment and retention.

SKILLS

You will have:

  • An understanding of potential barriers to education faced by Indigenous people and the available supports specifically offered to Indigenous peoples with regards to post-secondary education;
  • Knowledge of the Treaty Six Territory, with the ability to build positive relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers;
  • The ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, campus partners, community groups, high school administrators, and counsellors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and public speaking skills;
  • The ability to assess situations, solve problems, and apply sound judgement in providing solutions to prospective and current students;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to remain adaptable and work both independently and within a team, in a fast-paced and changing environment;
  • Strong initiative and motivation to strive for continuous improvement;
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to learn and use CRM/student database systems; and
  • The ability to speak and communicate in an Indigenous language.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, Indigenous studies, or related discipline.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in student support, advising, and recruitment.
  • Experience working with individuals and communities on educational topics within First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.
  • Experience working within a post-secondary environment is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • The ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and to travel to Indigenous communities within and outside of Alberta.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license.
