Student Assistant – Hyperspectral Scanning & Data Analysis
The Mads Clausen Institute, NanoSYD Centre, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a part-time Student Assistant (14 hours/week) from 1 October 2025 – 28 February 2026 to support research in hyperspectral scanning and data-driven materials analysis.
Applicants should have a background in physics, optics/photonics, materials science, nanotechnology, computer science, or related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Operate hyperspectral imaging systems (VIS–NIR/SWIR) for scanning of advanced material samples.
  • Perform system calibration (wavelength, spatial, and radiometric) to ensure reliable measurements.
  • Carry out data preprocessing (spectral normalization, noise reduction, baseline correction).
  • Conduct data analysis and visualization using Python or MATLAB, including PCA, clustering, and spectral unmixing.
  • Develop and maintain spectral libraries and annotate features/defects.
  • Support automation of scanning workflows and optimization of acquisition parameters.
  • Prepare documentation, figures, and short reports summarizing experimental outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Experience with data analysis, signal/image processing, or spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with hyperspectral imaging or related optical imaging methods is an advantage.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Interest in applying machine learning or AI to spectral datasets is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, reliable, and motivated to work in a research environment.

Please note, the selected candidate as Student Assistant or Academic Supervisor must be enrolled as student at SDU.
Employment shall take place in accordance with the framework agreement between the Ministry of Finance and SUL (National Union for Student Teachers in Government Service).
