The Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre is seeking applicants to for a Student Assistant. The Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre offers services and supports to First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students attending UPEI as well as cultural information and resources to the whole University community.
The successful candidate will facilitate programming and provide support to the Mawi’omi Centre Coordinator, the Elder(s) in Residence and other Office of Student Culture and Community Standards staff to enhance supports and services for UPEI Indigenous Students. This position is part of the Office of Student Culture and Community Standards and will report to the Mawi’omi Coordinator and the Manager of Student Culture and Community Standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Self-motivated UPEI student, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
• Excellent organization, time management and communication skills
• Previous experience working with students and youth considered an asset
• Event planning experience is an asset
• Indigenous cultural competency is required
• Lived experience with Indigenous communities is an asset
• Knowledge of Mi’kmaq culture is an asset
  Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.

• Provide a welcoming environment for Indigenous students visiting the Mawi’omi Centre
• Support with scheduling, planning and delivering social and cultural events throughout the year including the Mi’kmaq History month
• Aid the Elder(s) in Residence as needed
• Monitor the Mawi’omi Centre email and maintain regular communication with Indigenous Students via email and social media
• Support the Mawi’omi Centre Coordinator in creating content for the Centre’s Social media accounts
• Provide peer mentorship and refer students to other campus and community support services as needed
• Conduct presentations/outreach into the public school system and local communities with the guidance of the Centre’s Coordinator
