POSITION SUMMARY

The Office of Community Engagement is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Student Data Analyst and Story Maps Specialist to support data collection, organization, visualization, and analysis efforts related to university and statewide community engaged projects. In addition to working with both quantitative and qualitative datasets, this position will involve using ESRI Story Maps to create compelling, interactive narratives that communicate research findings and community stories to diverse audiences.
As part of our team, you will help gather and analyze information from diverse sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, community organizations, and direct outreach and transform that information into accessible, visually engaging formats. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, a passion for community engagement, and the creativity to integrate data and storytelling into meaningful, impactful digital maps and narratives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with comfort in making phone calls to relevant organizations.
  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) during the fall and spring semesters (audit hours do not count).
  • If Work Study, must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background in community-engaged work or partnerships with community organizations.
  • Experience working with data from different sources, e.g. U.S. Census Bureau.
  • Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) e.g. ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 10, or QGIS).
  • Exposure to programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
Responsibilities
  • Collect, organize, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources.
  • Research and verify information through web-based sources, email, and direct phone outreach.
  • Support community-engaged research projects in partnership with local organizations and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive spreadsheets and/or databases.
  • Summarize findings in clear and accessible formats for reports and presentations.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team environment.
