Description

ABOUT US

The Sheffield College is a further and higher education institution dedicated to providing academic, vocational, and professional qualifications to approximately 13,000 young people and adults annually. Our mission is to transform lives through learning, advocating for inclusivity and diversity at every stage.
Are you passionate about supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to thrive, progress and feel confident in their futures?
We’re looking for a dedicated Student Mentor to join our specialist provision at The Sheffield College. This is a rewarding and varied role where you’ll work closely with learners with learning difficulties and disabilities to help remove barriers to learning, develop their independence, and reach their full potential.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Student Mentor, you’ll play a key role in ensuring students with SEND have a positive, personalised and consistent experience at college. You’ll work closely with Personal Tutors, the EHCP team and curriculum staff to provide wraparound pastoral, behavioural, and wellbeing support, particularly for learners identified as high or medium risk. You will help deliver targeted interventions, improve engagement and attendance, and develop strong relationships with parents and carers.
You’ll also lead on positive behaviour support, using de-escalation strategies, restorative approaches and person-centred planning to help learners succeed in their college journey.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Supporting learners’ transition into college, including enrolment and induction
  • Providing targeted mentoring around behaviour, attendance, engagement and emotional wellbeing
  • Responding to learners needs as they arise
  • Contributing to and leading on Positive Engagement Plans and behaviour support strategies
  • Responding to safeguarding, mental health and crisis situations appropriately
  • Acting as an advocate for students in behaviour and disciplinary meetings
  • Leading on restorative conversations and reintegration planning
  • Supporting high-quality parent/carer communication and engagement
  • Helping embed SHAPE values (Staying Safe, Health & Well-being, Active Citizenship, Progression & Careers, and Equality Matters) into the learner experience
