Description

THE ICHAI PROJECT LAB:

The Indiana Center for Healthcare Artificial Intelligence (iCHAI) is led by physician-researcher and vascular surgeon Dr. Andrew Gonzalez and located in The William M. Tierney Center for Health Services Research at Regenstrief Institute. As a health services researcher, Dr. Gonzalez seeks to advance foundational research in computational vascular imaging, use real world data and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve clinical decision-making and outcomes in vascular surgery, and apply design-thinking to health policy that protects healthcare equity rather than exacerbate disparities for historically marginalized groups. The iCHAI lab focuses on solving downstream clinical tasks by applying innovative tools like Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer vision, and multimodal modeling to unformatted electronic health record data.
The lab is accepting applications for a Student Research Assistant (SRA). This opportunity is temporary and part-time for 2025, with the potential for extending the position beyond that time. The SRA will be able to work with other lab members studying comparative capabilities of AI technologies for medical data processing tasks. Lab activities may include data annotation, coding, and data management in addition to attending lab meetings, conducting reviews of literature, and developing sections of reports and abstracts under the guidance of Dr. Gonzalez.

DESCRIPTION

Dr. Gonzalez is Associate Director for Data Science in The William Tierney Center for Health Services Research at Regenstrief Institute, and a vascular surgeon appointed in the Indiana University School of Medicine. He focuses use of real-world data and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve clinical decision-making and outcomes in vascular surgery.
The student(s) selected for this position will participate in a part-time (up to 10 hours per week) employment position as a student research assistant that includes structured research and academic activities. Students can gain experience in research methodology related to health services research, implementation science, and Learning Health Systems. Research project types vary and include a number of both funded and unfunded research projects. Lab activities likely include data annotation, coding, and data management in addition to attending lab meetings, and conducting reviews of literature under the guidance of Dr. Gonzalez. Students may also assist the research team with presentations, abstracts, and peer-reviewed manuscripts, and grant writing. The work environment across the center and Institute is collaborative within our multidisciplinary team of clinicians, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, behavioral scientists, and data scientists.
Research centers at Regenstrief function on a hybrid working model. This opportunity is largely comprised of remote work, with the potential to work onsite in an office environment and engage in onsite networking and learning events.
