Description
Description The Sub Arc Machine Welder is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring submerged arc welding (SAW) equipment to produce high-quality welds on heavy steel components. This role requires strong knowledge of welding procedures, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to read blueprints and follow WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications). Welding & Machine Operation Set up and operate SubArc machines, including weld tractors, manipulators, and automated systems. Load and maintain wire electrode, flux hopper, and flux recovery systems. Monitor weld parameters such as wire feed rate, travel speed, voltage, and amperage. Perform root, fill, and cap passes per job requirements and WPS. Conduct basic machine troubleshooting to maintain continuous operation. Quality & Inspection Interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and work orders. Measure welds using gauges, measuring tools, and visual inspection. Ensure welds meet structural, dimensional, and code requirements (AWS, ASME, etc., if applicable). Identify defects such as undercut, porosity, or lack of fusion and correct them. Safety & Housekeeping Follow all safety procedures, including PPE, lockout/tagout, and hot-work protocols. Maintain clean work area, weld equipment, cords, hoses, and consumables. Safely handle flux materials and heavy steel components. Documentation Complete production logs, quality reports, and equipment checklists. Record heat numbers, wire/flux types, and WPS information as required. Requirements Required High school diploma or equivalent. 1–3 years of welding experience (SAW preferred; training may be provided). Ability to Pass a Welding Plate Test 3g, Open root downhill with GMAW (aka MIG), Uphill fill and cap with FCAW (aka Flux), Full penetration all welded from one side, no weld on the backside. Ability to read blueprints and welding symbols. Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills. Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in industrial environments.
