Job Summary: The Substance Abuse Counselor provides direct services to clients of the Bill Wilson Center, primarily for youth and young adults, ages 18-24 yr. The Substance Abuse Counselor will work closely as part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides comprehensive services that include emergency shelter, counseling, mental health and drop in center services to homeless and at risk of homeless individuals and families. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Facilitate Substance Abuse groups and 1:1 Maintain Data for 7 Challenges and participate in all Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement processes to ensure Fidelity to 7 Challenges model. Maintain all 7 Challenges Leadership criteria; act as Leadership mentor to others providing 7 Challenges groups and 1:1 Quality assurance and outcomes tracking & leadership in agency substance abuse services quality assurance reporting. Provide services to clients as assigned. Provide comprehensive assessment of service needs. Recommend interventions to client and/or team as appropriate. Facilitate individual and group interventions (e.g. skills building, education, etc.) as needed. Foster and develop relationships with client family and friends. Coordinate services with other involved services providers. Provide referrals and linkages to services specific to client’s needs. Provide follow-up to ensure services are obtained. Provide counseling and advocacy as needed. Provide crisis intervention as needed within scope of practice. Develop collaborative relationships with community partners. Communicate effectively with an inter-disciplinary team and participate in team meetings to review cases. Maintain statistical data and complete reports as appropriate. Enter ALL client data into AWARDS AND HMIS systems. Must maintain AWARDS and HMIS updated with all client information and data. Attend agency and other program meetings and training as appropriate. Participate in agency Program Quality Improvement activities and initiatives. Participate in agency Safety initiatives and proactively report safety issues to management immediately. Maintain and observe all HIPAA regulations that apply. Develop and maintain accurate community resources for education, information and referrals appropriate to client needs. Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance. Follow written and verbal directions and complete assigned tasks on schedule. Use problem-solving methods to continuously improve operations. Additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; and two to four year’s related experience and/or training; Valid state approved substance abuse/addiction prevention certification required. Candidates on the licensure track for LCSW, LMFT or LPCC highly desired. Experience working with culturally diverse youth required. Required Skills/Abilities: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of an organization. Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk throughout the office for periods exceeding 10 minutes, sit for extended periods of 10–15 minutes or more, crouch as needed, and lift or move objects weighing up to or more than 20 pounds. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may be loud when conducting street outreach. The temperature may also be extreme if conducting street outreach. Work is conducted indoors and outdoors.
