Substation Control Design – Engineer/Designer Southern Company Services Technical Shared Services – Substation Engineering This position will be located at The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL TRAVEL & WORK LOCATION This position requires approximately 25% of travel to the surrounding areas Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. The role is based out of The Energy Center (HWY 280), Birmingham, AL. Relocation assistance may be provided for candidates not currently living within a reasonable commute distance. JOB SUMMARY The Substation Control Design Engineer/Designer is responsible for designing protective relay and control schemes utilizing AutoCad and advanced microprocessor-based relay systems for both greenfield and brownfield projects. The role includes specifying and procuring materials for substation design packages, which include stock, shop-fabricated, and non-stock items. Additionally, the position involves preparing and transmitting drawing packages and supporting specifications through the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Prioritize SAFETY using a “Safety First” mentality and lead by example. Adhere to Quality Assurance guidelines for high-quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations, based on Southern Company design standards. Provide guidance on Southern Company Design Standards, procedures, and processes. Design protective relay & control schemes in AutoCad utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects. Specify and order material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program. Collaborate and coordinate with cross-functional teams involved in Substation Design. Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues. Provide support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Substation Maintenance. Perform site visits for projects, including pre-engineering meetings, pre-construction meetings, and post-job evaluation meetings. Some overnight travel will be required. Support Southern Company’s design criteria and standardization effort. Manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project/team goals. Support Southern Company storm restoration efforts. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education: Degree or experience in at least one of the following areas is preferred: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology Associate degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant design experience No Degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant design or utility experience Experience: Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience is a strong plus. Experience using Autodesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is preferred. Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred. The ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram is preferred. Experience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred. Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred. Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred. Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply. Strong problem-solving skills and a self-starter attitude. Ability to work well in a team environment and develop relationships at all levels. Effective time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines. Customer focus with a willingness to meet the needs of our customers and solicit feedback. A good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred.
