Substitute ESL Literacy and Citizenship Instructor - IDPL (Adult Education) COMPANY DESCRIPTION Instituto del Progreso Latino is a community organization whose mission is to contribute to the fullest development of Latino(a) immigrants and their families through education, training and employment that fosters participation in the changing U.S. society while preserving cultural identity and dignity.  Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year. POSITION DESCRIPTION Under the supervision of the ESL Literacy and Citizenship Coordinator, the Substitute ESL Literacy and Citizenship Instructor is responsible for imparting classes for the Citizenship, English Literacy, and first language literacy classes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Presents material for program classes according to curriculum guidelines. * Evaluates student progress utilizing quizzes, exams, performance portfolios, or other type of qualitative or quantitative evaluation. * Administers and grades exams, quizzes, and other forms of student evaluation. * Prepares syllabus documents as requested. * Is present for a minimum of 95% of scheduled days. * Motivates students to attend class, as measured by an acceptable rate of attendance and retention. * Keeps accurate attendance records in two forms, a daily sign-in sheet for participants and a classroom record. * Able to provide instruction in morning and evening on the same day if needed. * Stays up to date by attending professional development as requested by supervisor. * Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION * B.A. in language, math, subject area or education * 1 year classroom experience teaching adults * Previous syllabus and lesson plan writing as instructor * Excellent oral and written communication skills, Bilingual Spanish English preferred * Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality  * Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team  * Exceptional organization and time management skills  * Excellent customer service skills * Ability to maintain composure under pressure.  * Dependable and punctual * Exhibits professional courtesy in dealing with program participants, colleagues, and team members, and the public. * Shows enthusiasm to teach, understands and applies current best-practices in classroom techniques and materials. * Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet PHYSICAL DEMANDS  Nature of work requires an ability to stand for long periods of time and operate standard business office equipment.  Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
