OVERVIEW

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Lead Technician to join our team. The SUE Lead Tech is responsible for conducting and supervising utility designating and surveying field operations and supervising vacuum excavation teams

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High proficiency in geophysical prospecting for underground utilities, including multi-frequency equipment and ground-penetrating radar.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a SUE Tech II or 3 years applying geophysical equipment in utility locating for a contract firm or major utility company.
  • Strong surveying skills are desired but not necessary.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility records, highway design plans, as-builts, and related documents.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel regionally (60-80% of the time, up to 2 weeks at a time) and work overtime as required.
  • Ability to operate independently in a reliable, efficient and safe manner.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including operating heavy tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • OSHA 30 safety certification, confined space entry, TWIC, or E-rail certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize geophysical prospecting equipment (e.g., pipe and cable locators, ground-penetrating radar) to accurately designate complex underground utility layouts.
  • Lead and coordinate all SUE field activities, including maintenance and operation of vehicles, equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings with crew and subcontractors before fieldwork begins.
  • Implement and maintain proper traffic control signage per safety standards.
  • Interact professionally with co-workers, clients, subcontractors, and third parties on behalf of the company during field operations.
  • Perform surveying tasks to designate utilities and record test hole locations.
  • Ensure quality control of field data and prepare accurate field sketches or reports.
  • Train and mentor junior crew members to develop their technical and safety skills.
  • Coordinate with project managers to meet project timelines and deliverables.
