Description The Raritan Bay Area YMCA is currently seeking caring and dedicated Summer Camp One-to-One Counselors/Aides for the upcoming summer season to join our team and help create a positive, inclusive camp experience for all youth. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic and growing YMCA located just five miles west of New York City in the waterfront city of Perth Amboy. Since 1912, the Raritan Bay Area YMCA has proudly served the evolving needs of our community. Today, we support more than 6,000 members in the Raritan Bay area through programs and initiatives focused on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. Under the guidance of the Director of Mental Health Services, the Summer Camp One-to-One Counselor/Aide provides individualized support to campers with specialized needs, helping ensure they can safely and fully participate in our Enrichment and/or Day Camp programs. The Summer Camp One-to-One Counselor/Aide also supports and promotes the organization’s mission by embodying the core values of Honesty, Caring, Responsibility, Respect, and Faith, while demonstrating cause-driven leadership through the YMCA Leadership Competencies: Mission Advancement, Collaboration, Operational Effectiveness, and Personal Growth. Season Dates: June 29 – August 7 Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8am to 4pm Pay Range: $22 to $23 per hour Essential Job Functions: Provide direct supervision and individualized support to an assigned camper to ensure safe participation in all camp activities. Support the planning and implementation of inclusive, age-appropriate camp activities and adapt programming as needed to meet the camper’s developmental needs. Collaborate with counselors, site leaders, and the Director of Mental Health Services to identify barriers to participation and implement support strategies. Maintain a safe and positive camp environment by following RBAYMCA policies, procedures, and positive behavior support practices. Supervise campers during all scheduled activities, including swim time, locker room use, and transitions. Ensure proper use and care of camp equipment, supplies, and RBAYMCA property. Report first aid incidents, behavioral concerns, or other significant issues to the Unit Leader or Site Coordinator and seek guidance from camp leadership as needed. Requirements Must be 18 years of age or older. High school diploma or equivalent required; one year of college or more preferred. Minimum one year of related experience working with youth, ideally with special needs, in school, daycare, or camp settings. Experience may include academics, mental/behavioral health, creative arts, camping, songs, skits, sports, aquatics, or recreational games. Experience working with children with special needs is required. Background in recreation, education, camping, or sports is favorable. Strong patience, empathy, and communication skills (written and oral). Ability to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for campers. Ability to follow camp policies, licensing guidelines, and safety protocols, including swimming and activity supervision. CPR/First Aid certification preferred, or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp. Physically able to participate in camp activities and supervise children throughout the day.
