Description
Public Affairs Assistant Summer Student ABOUT US The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has been serving Edmonton and area since 1907, dedicated to helping people and pets thrive, together. As a leader in animal welfare, we go beyond sheltering homeless animals — shaping a community that values the human-animal bond through advocacy, education and accessible support services. Our mission is to enrich the lives of people and companion animals through sheltering animals in need, supporting pet guardians, engaging with our community and inspiring compassion. Guided by our values of compassion, trust, improvement, results, inclusivity and teamwork, we work toward a more humane and connected community for all. THE ROLE The Summer Student Public Affairs Assistant will support the Edmonton Humane Society’s advocacy initiatives under the direction of the Senior Manager, Reputation & Brand. Key duties include researching priority animal welfare and community issues, assisting in the development of communication and advocacy materials, and collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather insights. This role offers a valuable opportunity for a student in public policy, communications, law, or community engagement to gain practical experience and contribute to meaningful animal welfare advocacy. KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Research & Insights •    Conduct research on current and emerging animal welfare and advocacy issues. •    Support the design, collection, and analysis of primary research such as surveys or stakeholder feedback. •    Collaborate with internal teams to collect relevant information and solicit input on advocacy priorities. •    Maintain organized documentation and summaries of research findings. Advocacy Support •    Assist with drafting letters, position statements, and other supporting documents related to advocacy initiatives. •    Help prepare presentations, briefing notes, talking points and supporting materials for meetings and outreach. •    Contribute to the development of evidence-based recommendations and policy positions. •    Ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with EHS’ mission and messaging. Communications & Outreach •    Assist in developing communications plans and materials to support advocacy initiatives. •    Help coordinate outreach to external stakeholders and community partners. •    Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for advocacy campaigns and engagement opportunities. •    Support communication and outreach efforts to internal and external stakeholders as needed. EDUCATION & REQUIREMENTS •    Currently enrolled in post-secondary studies in Communications, Political Science, Law, Public Relations, Non-Profit Management, or a related field. •    Experience conducting research or collecting information through school, volunteer, or work projects. •    Exposure to writing or editing reports, summaries, or communication materials. •    Experience working collaboratively on group projects or coordinating feedback. •    Previous involvement in non-profit, advocacy, or community initiatives is an asset. SKILLS & ABILITIES An ideal candidate possesses strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent research and analytical abilities, and is highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities. They are proficient with Microsoft Office, comfortable using digital collaboration tools, and demonstrate an interest in animal welfare, public policy, or community engagement.
