Description
Title: Supervising Attorney - Hotline Reports To: Director of Legal Projects FLSA Status: Exempt The starting salary range for the Supervising Attorney for Hotline is $90,000-$130,000. Essential Functions Supervision of 4-6 Hotline Case Handlers (75% of work time) Supervision of the individual: Review and approve time off requests, timecards, expenses Conduct regular performance management meetings, at least twice monthly, including pulling relevant casework reports to review with staff member. Review performance, set goals, review cases closed, answer questions, determine training and/or tech needs, other areas of support as needed Implement Performance Improvement Plans, when a hotline staff member is not meeting expectations Conduct annual reviews for each supervisee using the organization’s approved template and process Develop and implement individual work plans for each supervisee Coordinate with and provide input to other supervising attorneys, as appropriate Work with supervisees to ensure that they have opportunities for professional development Legal Supervision of their work Ensuring efficient and effective handling of high-volume hotline advice cases Ensuring quality of legal advice – meeting Legal Services Corporation (LSC), Minnesota Board of Civil Legal Aid (BOCLA) and ethical standards Ensuring legal advice meets Justice North quality and quantity standards Ensuring professional communication both internally and externally Evaluation of legal/professional judgement for advice given Complete conflict of interest analysis as requested by intake and route case appropriately Evaluate requests for income and asset waivers from intake and route appropriately Evaluate assigned funding codes where there are questions and ensure cases are assigned to appropriate specific grant funding Participate in regular meetings, at least bi-weekly, with your director to discuss your team, issues, etc Leadership Consistent participation in leadership meetings, all staff meetings, trainings, off-sites meetings, organizational events as required, etc. Exhibit excellent leadership skills to create and maintain a positive, productive, welcoming and inclusive environment Ability to build a high performance, fun and engaging work culture Mentor staff and foster a learning and growth environment. Provide honest, candid, and timely feedback in a professional and respectful manner Communicate with staff and other offices/groups and foster good working relationships Assist with general administrative requests, such as input on budgets, grant deliverables Participate in community and bar association activities relevant to the work of the organization Participate in onboarding and training for staff, as requested Participation in organization wide project work as appropriate Serve on statewide legal aid committees, as requested Comply with LSC, BOCLA, and other funders’ regulations and requirements Generate reports as requested to analyze and improve client service delivery Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance Direct Services to Clients (25% of work time) Providing direct legal services in the form of high-quality legal advice to eligible clients Participate in clinics, outreach and legal education activities as directed by organization standards Forward all grievances or client complaints to the Director of Litigation / Legal Projects promptly after receipt Consult with other staff about cases, legal strategy, etc. as appropriate Qualifications Law degree Licensed to practice law in Minnesota, willingness to take next scheduled bar examination, or eligible for admission by motion or reciprocity Legal services experience is strongly preferred Hotline experience preferred Legal supervisory experience preferred Demonstrated commitment to provision of quality legal services to low-income persons. Ability to work independently and with others as part of the legal team with professionalism, respect, and collegiality Valid driver’s license, insurability with JN’s carrier, and reliable transportation is necessary due to large geographic area served Exceptional oral and written advocacy skills Demonstrated time management skills and productivity Demonstrated exceptional professional judgment Demonstrated excellent communication skills Working Conditions and Physical Demands Hybrid/Remote with some community-based work Occasional evening, weekend and early morning hours Some travel required The specific statements shown in each section of this description are not intended to be all-inclusive.
