JOB SUMMARY - Reporting to the Director of Finance (or designate), and in accordance with Ballenas Housing Society mission, strategic direction, principles and policies, this position is responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of finance staff and functions including accounts payable, accounts receivables, general accounting and related programs.

KNOWLEDGE

· Sound knowledge of non-profit accounting principles, practices and procedures including budgets, year-end accounting, preparation of financial statements.
· Sound knowledge of federal and provincial legislation, regulations and precedents respecting government and not-for-profit, with specific emphasis on financial planning and implications; and Canadian and BC payroll requirements including Employment Standards Act requirements.
· Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook); strong computer skills in accounting programs (specific knowledge and/or practical experience of (Arcori is an asset); payroll related software, complex spreadsheets, other related data entry and word processing.

· Demonstrated experience working directly with vulnerable populations including seniors and persons with mental and physical disabilities, addictions issues and low literacy
· Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive information.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration specializing in finance or accounting.
· Minimum of five (5) years direct experience preferably in a not-for-profit environment, including a minimum of two (2) years direct supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

Ø Plan, assign and review the work of staff engaged in day-to-day bookkeeping/ accounting role
Ø Participate in the day-to-day delivery of accounting and payroll services including transactional accounting, full-cycle bookkeeping, GL postings, financial reconciliations, preparation of bi-weekly payroll for review, preparation and filing GST reports, assist with banking services
Ø Assist with the year-end audit process, including preparation of various reporting schedules to support amounts and notes disclosed in the annual financial statements
Ø Assist with budget planning and monitoring to ensure financial objectives are achieved in accordance with approved budgets, analyze variances and recommend corrective solutions
Ø Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
Ø Participate in the recruitment of staff; provide input into performance reviews; recommend performance improvement plans where performance concerns arise.
Ø Initiate, review and recommend operational processes to ensure efficiencies
Ø Identify changes in the Society Act requirements to ensure compliance as well as other regulatory and reporting requirements; and provide technical advice and recommendations
Ø Support Ballenas in its interactions with and reporting requirements to government agencies and stakeholders through reporting financial information in an understandable, clear and accurate manner as required.
