Supervisor, Accounting Operations and Payroll
DEPARTMENT: Accounting Policy and Financial Reporting
REPORTS TO: Manager, Accounting Operations and Payroll
LOCATION: Hybrid/Reston VA (3 days a week in the office) - Must be local
SALARY: 110 - 115K + 10% Bonus

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

This position’s primary functions are supervising the general ledger and payroll processes, and assisting with budget and forecast reporting. The incumbent is expected to understand and apply accounting principles generally accepted in the United States (GAAP); analyze and review reconciliation accounting information; review journal entries; manage the tracking of prepaid expenses and expense accruals; and prepare accurate and timely IRS and regulatory reports. This position has one direct report: Staff Accountant.

PRINCIPAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, or relevant work experience
  • 8 to 12 years work experience in accounting (or finance) and payroll
  • Demonstrates a high level of accuracy and care in all work
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills
  • Excels at managing complex tasks with precision
  • Team player, ability to function in a high-performing team within an inclusive work environment
  • Ability to listen and integrate ideas from diverse groups of individuals, build and maintain respectful relationships, collaborate with others, and resolve conflicts constructively
  • Ability to initiate and complete work assignments effectively and in a timely manner, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of performance
  • Advanced degree or professional certification in accounting and/or payroll a plus
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States
Responsibilities
  • Supervise the timely closing of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end periods and the reconciliation process of balance sheet accounts
  • Supervise weekly processing and review of accounts payable, ensuring compliance with divisional budgets
  • Assist with the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end accruals
  • Manage fixed assets reconciliations and related depreciation reporting promptly
  • Manage the processing and review of semi-monthly and unscheduled payrolls
  • Manage and review quarterly and annual reporting related to payroll and benefits (e.g. W-2s, 940, 941)
  • Maintain current knowledge and comply with applicable federal and state wage and tax laws
  • Become a subject expert on OF policies that relate to expenses and travel as well as the OF benefit plans
  • Maintain financial and confidential payroll information, files, and records to ensure the availability of documentation and compliance with established policies and regulatory guidelines
  • Assist with annual budgeting, variance analysis, and forecasting
  • Support internal, regulatory, and IRS reporting, such as Board of Director reporting, 1099 & 1042 reporting, and other ad hoc reporting requests
  • Maintain the Accounting Operations and Payroll procedures manuals, ensuring updates are implemented and approved in a timely manner
  • Assist with internal and external audits
  • Participate in vendor maintenance/management related to the OF including proper documentation and controls, confirming tax and financial information, and providing data to the OF Vendor Management program as needed
  • Participate in analysis and implementation of internal controls related to OF operations, accounting, payroll and reporting
  • Crosstrain with other Accounting Operations team members
  • Support the annual Risk Control Self-Assessment
  • Perform accounting research and analysis and assist in technical accounting memorandums
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
