The Linux & Unix Systems Engineering Supervisor leads a small team of engineers (Levels I–III) responsible for supporting and modernizing RHEL and Solaris platforms. This player-coach role balances people leadership with hands-on engineering to ensure reliability, security, and operational excellence across enterprise systems. The supervisor guides architecture decisions, oversees workload distribution, ensures compliance, and represents the team in cross-functional forums (CAB/ARB) and strategic initiatives. Responsibilities Team Leadership & People Management: Supervise 2–4 engineers (Linux/Unix Systems Engineer I–III); conduct regular 1:1s, coaching,and performance feedback. Plan and assign work based on skill level; set team goals, priorities, and deliverable timelines. Lead hiring/onboarding for the team; create individualized development plans (e.g., RHCSA →RHCE → RHCA). Mentor Engineer I in foundational skills; guide Engineer II in project ownership; review Engineer III designs as technical lead. Operational Ownership & Escalation: Own operational KPIs: patch & hardening compliance, SLA adherence, backup verification, configuration drift, and automation coverage. Manage on-call readiness, rotation, and escalation paths; lead post-incident RCAs and drive corrective actions. Ensure audit readiness (SOX, HIPAA, PCI) and coordinate evidence with Security/Compliance Architecture & Engineering (Hands-On as Needed): Oversee and participate in design and deployment of RHEL and Solaris platforms across physical and virtualized environments (AWS; Azure; VMware; LDOMs/Zones). Support container development and administration (such as Docker, Podman; Kubernetes/OpenShift environments where applicable). Guide HA cluster architectures (e.g., Pacemaker/Corosync) and enterprise storage (LVM, ZFS, Stratis, Ceph Storage, or other enterprise storage technologies). Review and approve Configuration-as-Code (e.g., Ansible) and Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform) patterns, author critical modules or reference templates when necessary. Oversee standard OS images (Kickstart, cloud-init) and repository/lifecycle management; ensure consistency across environments. Direct advanced troubleshooting during complex outages; partner with Principal/Staff engineers for architectural escalations. Security, Compliance & Standards: Enforce OS hardening standards (DISA STIG, CIS benchmarks) and vulnerability remediation processes. Maintain platform standards, SOPs, and runbooks; ensure documentation quality and currency. Ensure change control quality and provide approvals for production changes. Validate platform readiness for releases and new deployments. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Governance: Represent the team in CAB and Architecture Review Board; communicate impacts/risks to stakeholders. Coordinate work with DevOps, Security, DBAs, Virtual Infrastructure, Networking, and Application Development teams. Provide input on tooling, licensing, and training budgets relevant to Linux/Unix operations.
