Description

The Department of Pathology is seeking a MLS Supervisor (Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor) to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of the Hematology and Bone Marrow units. Performs clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Many of these procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals.
This position is 100%-time, 1st shift, Monday-Friday, with rotating on-call.

Duties to include:

  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.
  • Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in a unit/shift.
  • Monitor equipment performance, diagnose instrument problems/malfunctions and make repairs or initiate service requests.
  • Assist the Assistant Lab Manager in coaching and mentoring staff members to facilitate professional development.
  • Perform additional tasks as may be assigned by supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited college/university with specialized training in laboratory medicine, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • At least 4 years of experience with hematology testing is required.
  • **Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Specialist in Hematology (ASCP SH) designation.
  • Experience with validation and implementation of new testing or instruments.
  • Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.
  • Experience working in an academic health center.
  • Knowledge of and applied experience working with collective bargaining work rules.
  • Experience with personnel, team, or project management.
  • Experience developing and delivering laboratory sciences-based technical training in hematology.
  • Experience with bone marrow collection and handling.
  • Experience working with total laboratory automation.
  • Experience working with middleware.
  • Experience working with Sysmex and Cellavision analyzers
  • Excellent documentation skills.
