JOB SUMMARY:

The Support Worker, under the supervision of the Program Manager, provides a program that follows a psychosocial model of service delivery through a teaching/learning process that encourages independence and self-determination. In accordance with established service plans, works to meet goals with clients by demonstrating and modelling appropriate behaviour. The Support Worker is a valued team member within the mental health services.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Diploma in social services or related field
Introduction to Community Mental Health or equivalent,
One year of recent related experience working in the human service field preferably in mental health or equivalent training and experience,
Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience,
Or other qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work,
Valid standard First Aid
Food safe
Valid BC Class 4 drivers license or willingness to obtain said license within 3 months of hire.
Ability to clear a criminal record check working with vulnerable adults

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge and understanding of the psychosocial rehabilitation principles and model of care delivery and its relationship to a teaching/learning process, and the concepts of self-determination
Skills in observing, instructing, and demonstrating skills of independence to clients
Knowledge and understanding of psychiatric disorders
Ability to communication and to interact effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to organize and prioritize
Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients
Ability to interact effectively with the client population
Able to organize, communicate and motivate
Physical ability to carry out duties of the position

Responsibilities
  1. In accordance with established service plans, assists clients in ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living) designed to meet the needs of the clients as per their service plan and providing demonstrations as required. Assists in developing life skills such as getting up on time, appropriate dress, hygiene & grooming, housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, meeting financial obligations, making and keeping appointments and interpersonal skills by methods such as demonstrating and modelling appropriate actions.
  2. Provides feedback and input regarding client’s needs, performance and progress during regularly scheduled meetings and as required.
  3. Instruct, demonstrate and follow procedures to assist clients to become independent in taking responsibility for their life skill/vocational assignments.
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned.
