ABOUT THE ROLE

Western Health has nearly 30 HMO3 (PGY3+) Surgical positions available for the 2026 Clinical Year, commencing 2 February 2026.
Western Health offer a supported environment where Senior Medical Staff make an effort to know you personally and our HMO education program comprises fortnightly education sessions, incorporating simulation workshops and case based education sessions. We have an energetic group of JMS Medical Education Officers who coordinate educational opportunities for prevocational trainees, interns and medical students (Prevocational Education Committee in Surgery (PECS)).

Western Health offers a variety of surgical rotations within the HMO3 Surgical stream, these include:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • ENT Surgery
  • General Surgery
  • Colorectal, upper GI, Breast and Endocrine Surgery
  • Intensive Care Medicine
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Paediatric Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Urology
  • Surgical Nights and Relieving

Please Note: All HMOs will be assigned a night duty/relieving term during the year.
Every effort will be made to provide rotations of your choice – taking into consideration your career interests, training requirements, previous experience and demands of particular rotations. However, this is not a guarantee as this is dependent on the group of successful applicants and final rotation preferences. All HMOs will be assigned a combined annual leave/nights/relieving term during the year.
We have a strong focus on junior doctor education with a dedicated weekly intern and HMO education program, simulation and workshops for junior doctors, hospital grand rounds and a broad range of unit-specific education sessions. The Western Centre for Health Research and Education (WCHRE) at the Sunshine Hospital campus is a purpose built teaching and research facility, including a state-of-the-art simulation centre. Please see our junior doctor website for more information about your medical career at Western Health. https://westerndoctors.wh.org.au
