Description Position Title: Surgery Scheduler Reports to: Director of Nursing - Job Summary The Surgery Scheduler requires utilization of clinical knowledge to schedule appropriate procedures/surgeries per provider’s orders. The Surgical Scheduler must schedule surgical procedures consistent with the patient’s diagnosis and procedure request. Maintains a current list of privileges on all providers working at the surgery center. Also requires excellent customer service skills with patients, employees, and the public. The Surgery Scheduler must be able to respond to both written and oral correspondence regarding scheduling changes/cancellations in a timely, accurate manner. Individual must be organized and be able to manage demanding workload with accuracy. - Position Responsibilities Schedules surgical and pain procedures, for patients with appropriate provider and time/location slot, utilizing appropriate scheduling code. Keeps a current list of approved credentialed procedures for each provider. May interface with appropriate vendor staff to ensure all necessary equipment will be on site for procedures Collaborates with appropriate physician office staff to ensure a cohesive working relationship in providing patient care serves. Enters notes/special instructions needed for scheduling in the medical record. Effectively utilizes clinical knowledge when determining if appointment is consistent with the diagnosis/indications indicated by the provider. Provides accurate, detailed information to the patient regarding financial obligations related to the scheduled surgery or procedure. Confirms patient’s insurance provider and either obtains prior authorization or communicates need for prior authorization to appropriate parties as needed. Maintains records of no shows and cancellations of procedures. Assists other members of the department as needed and other duties as assigned. Completes required orientation as directed by facility. Respects patient and staff rights. Follows confidentiality and HIPAA regulations. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Punctual and dependent for assigned and confirmed shifts. Requirements Position Requirements High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Knowledge of medical terminology required. Ability to type 40 wpm preferred. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare workers required. Previous computer-based scheduling experience preferred. Demonstrate consistent professional conduct and meticulous attention to detail. Possesses aptitude for maintaining pace of facility patient flow. Ability to interact comfortably with a high volume of patients, facility staff, and office staff in a stressful environment. Be able to provide proof of identity and the right to work in the United States - Working Conditions Surgery schedulers spend a considerable amount of time looking at a computer monitor, typing, talking, and sitting. - Physical Demands Ability to lift twenty-five (25) pounds. Ability to sit for extended periods. Fine motor skills and visual and auditory acuity.
