Job Title Surgical Assistant Location Canton Facility Mercy Hospital Department Surgery Unit-Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital Job Code Q2501M Shift Variable Schedule 7:00am-3:30pm Job Summary Under the direct supervision of a licensed Surgeon, assists with critical procedures and tasks related to the specific training, score and orientation. Job Details Responsibilities: Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other team members with respect to the requirements for the surgical procedure. Uses knowledge of OR procedures with respect to attire, infection control and compliance practices. Prepares for the procedure or surgery by participating in the performance of the safety check/universal protocol determining the specific equipment needed, reviewing permits to confirm procedures and special needs, assisting in moving and positioning the patient, selecting x-rays for reference, inserting and removing Foley urinary bladder catheter, and draping the patient. Supports the Surgeon during the procedure or surgery by retracting tissue and organs, maintaining hemostatis by direct pressure, use of appropriate instrumentation, placing ties or ligatures, or applying chemical hemostatic agents, using electrocautery mono and bi-polar, clamping, and ligating and cutting tissue. Maintains integrity of sterile field, closing all wound layers, inserting drainage tubes, applying wound dressing and assisting with resuscitation or any other events in the OR. Performs any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and directed and supervised by the surgeon. Other duties as assigned. Education: Associate's Degree. If hired prior to August 1, 2018 ; graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program, but is not required to be certified by the NCCPA or hold a license to practice, or graduate of an un-accredited surgical assistant program. Laser safety course preferred. If hired August 1, 2018 or after ; graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant program. Must be a Certified Surgical First Assistant ( CSFA) offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA) within the first year of hire. Certification as a first Assist and a minimum of two years’ experience may offset the Associate Degree requirement if first assist certified is achieved prior to August 2021. Certifications: Basic Life Support( BLS) through American Heart Association(AHA) required. Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through American Heart Association preferred. If hired August 1, 2018 or after ; must be a Certified Surgical First Assistant ( CSFA) offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical assisting (NBSTSA) within the first year of hire. Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking, decisive judgment. Must be able to work in a dynamic ever changing environment and take appropriate action. Must be able to read, write, and perform arithmetic functions such as percentages and discounts in order to maintain accurate recordkeeping systems. Work Experience: Minimum two years of peri-operative practice in an acute care facility. Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and ginger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids. Able to safely transport patients on stretchers to bed using good body mechanics. Works extended hours as necessary. Personal Protective Equipment: Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
