Description Job Summary: Responsible for assisting patients with all aspects of pre-operative preparations once surgery is recommended by the physician. RESPONSIBILITIES: Often provides patient education on various eye surgeries, including but not limited to cataract surgery options with associated financial information, retina surgical procedures, cosmetic procedures, laser treatments, or any other eye related procedure recommended by the ophthalmologist. Schedules intra-vitreal injections and notifies the Materials Team Leader of the medications that will need ordered using the injection log and works closely with the Patient Accounts Team Leader to verify insurance coverage for such injections and completes any preauthorizations necessary. Schedules patients for surgery and reviews with them the pre-operative surgical paperwork, including the Patient Handbook, H&P requirements, drop and/or lid scrub instructions if needed. Explains that a member of the patient accounts department will contact them prior to the date of surgery with any expected out of pocket expenses and financing options. Explains that a member of the surgical facility will contact them the day prior to surgery to review their surgery time and surgical instructions. Ensures the patient understands all instructions before leaving the office. Completes the Pre-op Testing Note and Billing Sheet for all patients requiring pre-op testing. Schedules post-op appointments with the closest LEC office and prints appointment reminder to include with the surgical paperwork. If co-managed, schedules post-op appointments with the referring optometrist and documents them in EHR. Reviews the patient’s insurance coverage prior to surgery and requests preauthorization when required. Completes all necessary surgical paperwork: surgical fee slip, reservation form, surgical plan, and co-management for if applicable. Directs the charts or sends EHR tasks to the proper surgeon prior to surgery for review and notifies the surgeon if any testing still needs interpreted. (This gives the surgeon a chance to pick the intraocular lens ahead of time and dictate a letter to the referring doctor if necessary.) Reviews all charts after they are returned from the surgeon, follows up on anything they may ask for and completes the Surgical Plan Sheet (IOL Sheet) once the surgeon has calculated the IOL power/model.
