Description

Piper Companies is seeking a Surgical Scientist to join a dynamic preclinical research team. This full-time, on-site located in Norton Shores, MI role involves hands-on surgical work and protocol development to support innovative biomedical studies.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE SURGICAL SCIENTIST:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences, veterinary technology, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in surgical research, preferably in a laboratory setting.
  • Surgical Research Technician (SRT) or Surgical Research Specialist (SRS) certifications via the Academy of Surgical Research is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform and troubleshoot a range of surgical procedures independently.
  • Strong understanding of the scientific value of surgical models in therapeutic development.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and adaptability to new software platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and federal animal care regulations.
  • Experience working with common lab animal species and understanding of study protocols.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct surgical procedures and oversee pre- and post-operative care for laboratory animals involved in research studies.
  • Collaborate on the creation and refinement of anesthesia and surgical protocols.
  • Advise study teams and regulatory committees on surgical model design and implementation.
  • Assist in developing new surgical techniques and improving existing ones under guidance.
  • Lead training sessions for surgical staff and provide mentorship to technical personnel.
  • Continuously assess and update procedures to align with current industry standards.
  • Support the acquisition and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Participate in humane euthanasia procedures when required.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support research operations.
