Description

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE SURGICAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST INCLUDE:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in animal or life sciences.
  • Ability to independently perform, direct, and assist with minor and major surgical procedures.
  • Strong understanding of study design, protocols, and pre-clinical operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle common laboratory species and perform humane euthanasia procedures.
  • Knowledge of GLPs and federal regulations related to laboratory animal care.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, push/pull, and stand for extended periods; must be able to wear PPE including N95 masks and respirators.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extended shifts with short notice.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of surgical-related research experience.
  • SRT or SRS Certification through the Academy of Surgical Research.
  • Experience with ocular surgery.
  • Industry experience
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot surgical techniques and equipment.
Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SURGICAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST INCLUDE:

  • Perform surgical services to support of research protocols, including study setup, surgery, pre-operative preparation, supervision, and post-operative follow-up.
  • Perform surgical techniques and drug administration on animal models (medium to small) in a pre-clinical environment
  • Write and refine anesthesia protocols in collaboration with Study Directors and IACUC.
  • Assist in developing and improving surgical models under supervision.
  • Train and mentor Surgery Technicians and In-Life Technicians.
  • Evaluate and update procedures to align with industry best practices.
  • Support procurement of surgical equipment and supplies.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff.
  • Perform or assist with humane euthanasia procedures as needed.
  • Work with small animals (primarily guinea pigs) initially, with later exposure to large animals (sheep, goats, dogs).
  • Collaborate closely with Surgical Technicians in the OR.
  • Maintain a work balance of approximately 65% laboratory/OR and 35% office-based tasks.
