Department Overview To provide intra-operative technical assistance to physicians and RN's who care for obstetric patients experiencing a surgical intervention/other invasive procedure. To participate actively in the work of the unit, committee work, and program level activities/projects. The role requires completion of annual clinical competencies, attending staff meetings and educational events during the day, and actively participating in all quality improvement opportunities assigned. The role requires that all policies, procedures, and patient safety initiatives will be followed. Surgical Technologists are an integral part of the team providing surgical care to patients. Surgical Technologists function in the role of scrub person. Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of the surgeon and the R.N. to ensure that the O.R. environment is safe, equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Must possess expertise in the theory and application of surgical technique, human anatomy, and surgical procedures, implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate safe care of the patient during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist role requires extended periods of standing, lifting heavy instrumentation, and potential exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens. Function/Duties of Position Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure Scrubs, gowns, & gloves appropriately. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, solutions needed for procedure Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to operation and at appropriate intervals per policy Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants Helps in draping the sterile field Passes instruments, etc. to surgeon/assistant during procedure. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Assists other members of the team with room turnovers Assists with prepping room for the next patient Stocks labor rooms for next patient Required Qualifications Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire. New Employees as of 9/1/2015 Graduated from a Nationally-Accredited organization approved by the Oregon Health Authority as of date of hire; AND Hold and maintain a national Surgical Technologist Certification by NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) as of date of hire. New provision of House Bill 4106 amending ORS 676.875 (New Employees effective March 23, 2022): Completion of a surgical assistant or surgical technologist certification, including but not limited to a certified ophthalmic surgical assisting credential issued by the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or its successor organization, that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies OR Completed a Surgical Technologist training program in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service of the USA AND must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years. OR Did not graduate from an accredited school must and can provide documentation showing that he/she they practiced as a Surgical Tech during at least two of the three years immediately preceding January 1, 2017 AND must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
