Description
Under general supervision of medical and nursing staff, following policies, procedures and professional guidelines, assists with surgical and endoscopy procedures, provides, assembles and cares for surgical supplies, instruments and equipment before, during and after procedures. Assists with cleaning, restocking and processing of the surgical suite, instruments and equipment as needed. Identifies and reports situations requiring intervention to the RN or Clinician. Serves as a clinical preceptor for new OR scrub tech and OR technician students and serves as a resource person in at least five surgical specialty areas. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital. Essential Functions • Assemble, inspect, and sterilize surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies prior to procedures, ensuring readiness and compliance with safety standards. • Function independently as a scrub tech on major, high-complexity surgical cases across multiple specialties, ensuring procedural efficiency and patient safety. • Provide direct intraoperative support by passing instruments, maintaining clear visibility for the surgeon, and anticipating procedural needs. • Ensure all surgical tools and equipment are in proper working condition, coordinating repairs or replacements as needed. • Adhere strictly to infection control protocols, including proper hand hygiene, PPE use, and sterile field maintenance. • Engage in surgical team briefings and debriefings to clarify roles, review procedures, and contribute to continuous improvement. • Maintain current certification and complete a minimum of 12 CEUs annually, submitting documentation as required. • Develop and deliver at least two in-service training sessions per year to share expertise and promote best practices. • Provide guidance and support to new or less experienced surgical technologists, fostering a collaborative and educational environment. • Stay alert to changes in patient status during procedures and promptly report concerns to the RN or surgical team. Education Technical Program Surgical Technologist Or Technical Program Licensed Practical Nurse Program Certification Certified Surgical Technologists through National Board of Surgical Technology or Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Or Certified Surgical Technologists through Association of Surgical Technologist (AST) Or Certified Surgical Technologists through National Certified Surgical Technician (NCST) And Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Red Cross or American Heart Association Work Experience and Additional Information 5 years of progressive surgical tech experience.
