Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and organize the operating room (OR) for surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and sterile.
  • Assist surgeons and nurses during surgical procedures by passing instruments, sponges, and sutures, maintaining a sterile field, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team.
  • Set up and operate surgical equipment, such as lights, suction machines, and electrocautery devices, under the direction of licensed healthcare professionals.
  • Prepare and position patients for surgery, including prepping the surgical site, draping, and securing patient safety devices, in accordance with established protocols.
  • Anticipate and respond to the needs of surgeons and nurses during surgical procedures, providing timely assistance and ensuring smooth workflow in the OR.
  • Assist with patient transportation, transfer, and positioning within the OR, maintaining patient comfort and safety throughout the surgical experience.
  • Handle and dispose of surgical specimens and biohazardous materials appropriately, following infection control guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform surgical instrument sterilization, disinfection, and maintenance procedures, ensuring compliance with standards of practice and quality assurance measures.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, instrument counts, and patient care activities, adhering to facility policies and procedures.
  • Adapt to different surgical specialties, procedures, and team dynamics as you travel to new locations, demonstrating flexibility and proficiency in your surgical technology practice.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or equivalent certifying body.
  • Prior experience working as a surgical technologist in acute care settings, with proficiency in a variety of surgical specialties and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile techniques, with the ability to maintain a sterile field and prevent surgical site infections.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other members of the surgical team.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure surgical environments, prioritizing patient safety and efficient workflow.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in surgical preparation, instrumentation, and documentation tasks.
  • Willingness to be on call to work variable shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed to meet surgical scheduling demands.
  • Commitment to upholding professional ethics, standards of practice, and regulatory compliance in surgical technology practice.
