JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Responsible for aiding the professional nurse or physician in providing optimal patient care in the assigned single operating room in a scrub capacity. Responsible for providing patient care for assigned shift as scheduled full time or part time. Under the supervision of the Clinical Coordinator. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Skill and proficiency in the technical field of operating room technician. Such proficiency as acquired through the completion of a nine month to one year vocational program for surgical technologists.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION: Certificate of successful completion of surgical technology program. If completion of surgical technology program occurred AFTER May 21, 2007 and surgical technologist certification is not achieved and maintained, surgical technologist cannot be employed in the main operating room If completion of surgical technology program occurred BEFORE May 21, 2007, surgical technologist can be grandfathered to work non-certified if he/she worked 18 months preceding 5/21/2007 and maintains 15 CE hours yearly. Effective 2013 fifteen CE hours are required on file from all non-certified surgical technologists. Current BLS Certification to be obtained during orientation period and maintained throughout employment.
EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of hospital and department policies and procedures, surgical procedures, instruments, and equipment. Ability to scrub during surgical cases as acquired through three months of department orientation.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of principles of asepsis ensuring that proper techniques and practices are maintained, in providing age-specific patient care.
Identifies needed supplies and prepares equipment, packs, and room for patient and procedure, addressing age-specific patient care needs.
Scrubs, gowns, and gloves for self and physician for surgical procedures.
Handles and passes instruments correctly and insures their proper functionality and insures storage sponge, needle, and instrument counts.
Insures proper handling of all lab and tissue specimens according to established protocol.
Assumes responsibility for proper handling, sterilization, and stocking of supplies.
Relieves on cases at or during change of shift, breaks, or meal times, following correct protocol, to insure continuity of care.
Assists with table and room clean up following procedure, and prepares room for the next procedure within scheduled allocated times.
Access to medications May assist surgeon in operating room as needed.
Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
