Description Position: Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Technician Reports To: ASC Manager General Definition of Job Function: To ensure regulatory standards for sterilization and instrumentation are implemented. Perform the following duties on a daily basis or as needed: Demonstrate awareness of patients’ concerns and a willingness to address them. Avoid and prevent casual discussion of patients’ surgery among employees. Ensure patients’ safety and comfort. Observe pertinent changes in symptoms of patients’ condition and take appropriate action; report to physician. Document all pertinent messages or communication with patient in patients’ chart. Perform pre- and postoperative teachings with patients. Send tissue specimens to the pathology lab and file report. Follow-up on pathology reports making sure a copy is in the patient chart. Assist the Administrator in preparation of pre-operative charts as needed. Pull supplies for surgical procedures. Review preoperative charts to ensure all lab studies and necessary paperwork are available for surgery. Be prepared for all cases at the scheduled surgery times. Maintain sterile field during surgical procedures. Clean and restock Operating Rooms and Recovery Rooms. Check sterilized equipment for outdating. Clean autoclave and change vibraclean solution weekly. Clean surgical instruments and wrap for sterilization. Sterilize instrument packs per protocol. Scrub and/or assist in surgery. Assist with updating of printed material. Answer phones, take messages (pull corresponding patient chart as needed),and transfer calls when appropriate. Pull required paperwork for pre-operative appointments. Check charts for completeness and close out. Initiate communication to the Administrator in areas that require feedback, follow-up, or need to be addressed. Ensure quality assurance standards are maintained in the office. Other duties as assigned. Requirements Demonstrates current competency in those clinical responsibilities as listed previously. Medical Assistant skills obtained through applicable job experience and/or appropriate education; strong sense of professionalism; ability to organize work according to priorities; maturity and tact in dealing with patients, clients, and co-workers; ability to maintain a helpful and positive regard for the patient and family. The surgery center also has “Deemed Status” the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
