Position:  Surgical Technologist/Sterile Processing Technician Department:  ASC Reports to:  ASC Clinical Director FLSA:  Non-Exempt Position Summary Surgical Technologists/Sterile Processing Technicians are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operating procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of surgical procedures. Principle Duties and Responsibilities * Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure * Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon * Ensures quality patient care during the operation by maintaining a sterile field * Carries out technical tasks as well as cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissue * Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure * Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures * Performs appropriate counts before and after procedures * Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants * Helps in draping the sterile field * Opens sterile supplies; passes instruments to the surgeon during procedures * Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure * Anticipates additional supplies needed during the procedure * Keeps accurate records throughout the procedure * Properly cares for specimens * Prepares sterile dressings * Sponges or suctions operative site; cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon; connects drains to suction apparatus; secures dressings after incision closure * Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization * Assists other members of team with cleaning of room and preparing the room for the next patient * Helps transport patient to recovery room * Maintains accurate information on physician preference cards * Fulfills inventory needs in the operating rooms and stockroom * Other duties as assigned Work Relationship and Scope The Surgical Technologist/Sterile Processing Technician reports to the ASC Clinical Director. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Vocational/Technical Certificate as a Surgical Technologist preferred * CPR certification required * Knowledge of state, federal, CMS regulations * Strong communication skills; verbal and written * Ability to develop good working relationships with physicians and staff * Ability to work in a fast-paced medical facility while adhering to HIPAA compliance regulations * Demonstrates knowledge of proper, safe, efficient usage of office equipment, computers, and software, working knowledge of  Microsoft Office * Must be outgoing and cordial; demonstrated through solid customer service skills/experience * Must be flexible for changing job requirements Work Conditions:              Work is generally performed at the main clinic; 800 First Street, Wausau, WI. Travel to satellite locations or outreach hospitals/surgery centers is required as needed. Hours of work will depend on the needs of the Clinic. Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting (30 pounds), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs is required.
