Overview:
The Land Surveyor-in-Training or Survey Technician coordinates field survey crews and handles complex surveying tasks in both field and office settings. This role involves managing daily operations, ensuring quality standards, and utilizing technical and supervisory skills.
The position also requires fostering a positive team atmosphere, supporting staff development, and ensuring clear communication with the Project Surveyor regarding project status and issues. The Survey Technician / Land Surveyor-in-Training oversees the field personnel and ensures successful project execution throughout its lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct plane and geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, boundary, and control projects.
  • Research and prepare survey control data for field crews, with Project Manager approval
  • Participate in pre-survey planning with project managers and surveyors
  • Train and mentor field crews on surveying methods, equipment use, and safety protocols
  • Track project milestones, report progress, and communicate status updates to the Project Manager
  • Perform surveying calculations using tools like AutoCAD and COGO software
  • Prepare and maintain survey reports, including grade sheets, corner records, and other documentation
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data and assist in property boundary determination based on legal documents
  • Conduct ground surveys to establish baselines, elevations, and other measurements
  • Research legal and survey records for boundary information
  • Support the development of survey methods and procedures and perform QA/QC throughout the project lifecycle
  • Oversee equipment and vehicle maintenance, including calibrations, repairs, and logs
  • Coordinate pre-field work tasks, such as utility requests, corner records, and project scoping
  • Implement and monitor safety procedures to ensure compliance with health and safety standards
