POSITION SUMMARY:

The SVP, Head of Workers’ Compensation is a key executive leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, profitability, and operational effectiveness of the Workers’ Compensation underwriting portfolio. This role oversees the development and execution of underwriting guidelines, risk selection, pricing strategies, and portfolio management to ensure sustainable growth and strong performance. The SVP partners with cross-functional leaders in Claims, Actuarial, Sales, Product Development, and Compliance to align underwriting strategies with organizational goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, CPCU, ARM, or similar) preferred.
  • 15+ years of commercial underwriting experience, with a strong focus on Workers’ Compensation.
  • Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role with P&L responsibility.
  • Deep knowledge of workers’ compensation regulatory environments across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Proven ability to lead underwriting teams, drive strategic initiatives, and manage large portfolios.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience with data-driven underwriting models and technology platforms preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Workers’ Compensation underwriting function across all regions, ensuring consistent application of underwriting strategies and risk appetite.
  • Develop and implement underwriting policies, procedures, and pricing strategies aligned with corporate goals.
  • Drive profitable growth through effective portfolio management, risk analysis, and rate adequacy evaluations.
  • Provide executive oversight of underwriting performance, including key metrics such as loss ratios, combined ratios, retention, and new business production.
  • Collaborate with Actuarial, Claims, Legal, and Product teams to ensure profitability and compliance with state regulations.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with key brokers, agents, and distribution partners to support business development.
  • Monitor emerging trends in workers compensation, regulatory changes, and competitive dynamics to inform strategy.
  • Lead and mentor a team of underwriting executives and managers, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Represent the organization in industry forums, regulatory discussions, and internal committees as the subject matter expert in Workers’ Compensation.
