Summary of Swamper Responsibilities: The principal duty of a Swamper is to supply labor as directed by your supervisor. Working Safely and efficiently is the top priority on every job.
Our Swampers form part of a team of transportation specialists:
- Assist with training less experienced Swampers as directed by your supervisor.
- Promote teamwork in the branch and on the job site.
- Recognize the accomplishments of fellow workers.
- Lead by example.
Taking care of the trucks, trailers and associated equipment is an important role of the Swamper.
- The assigned equipment must be clean and organized at all times.
- Report equipment safety deficiencies immediately.
- Ensure the truck’s equipment is properly maintained at all times.
- Use rigging for its intended purpose only.
- Supervise all hook-ups and unhooks of trailer combinations.
- When working with the truck, do so in a professional courteous manner. Be a good company ambassador on the job and in public.
Compliance: Company, Government, and Customer policies and regulations must be followed and are the responsibility of the Swamper.
- Follow hours of work regulations and maintain drivers log according to government hours of work regulations.
- Comply with the company substance abuse policy.
- Study and understand government safety and transport regulations.
- Learn how to build loads to comply with customer site-specific requirements.
- Ensure that you possess current appropriate training certificates to operate units and work in accordance with government and customer regulations.
- Learn how to perform and document pre and post trip inspections.
Safety and Environmental: The Swamper must follow safe operating practices and company safety and environmental policies. The objective of each Swamper is to have no accidents, injuries or environmental contamination.
- Follow the companies safety programs.
- Wear personal protective equipment as required by company policy.
- Follow safe operating procedures on the job site.
- Attend all pre job safety meetings.
- Ensure that you have current required safety training to perform your assigned job.
- Ensure that you follow company environmental policies.
- Report incidents, accidents and near misses immediately upon occurrence.
- Attend regular Branch and site-specific safety meetings.
- Inspect all rigging prior to use.
- Return all equipment to its designed storage place.
- Remove all debris and deck pins from empty decks.
- Know how to identify and position equipment.
- Use Company approved procedures when rigging all equipment for movement.
- Provide accurate verbal directions and hand signals. These are to be clearly communicated to the Driver during all movement of equipment according to approved company procedures.
