This position serves our Safety Around Water programming which occurs normally between the hours of 9am-2pm. We are hopeful the person in this role will be able and willing to travel across Forsyth county branches among other branches in our association.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Are you an energetic, compassionate individual with a love for aquatics and a desire to create a safe, fun environment in our pools? Swim Lesson instructors help children and adults learn to be safe, confident and active in the water. Each instructor is provided with a curriculum designed to teach and build skills from basic floatation and water movement to advanced stroke technique. A swim instructor must be able to manage classes, plan activities to aid learning and provide the feedback needed to become the best swimmer they can be. Swim instructors must be able to teach, lead, organize and demonstrate the proper skills needed to swim.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines with prepared lesson plans
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.)
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures and pool rules. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  • At least 16 years of age
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent (Achieve within 90 days)
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification and Emergency Oxygen
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards; knowledge of swim strokes, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and sidestroke
  • Desire to work with individuals of all ages
  • Strong organizational, verbal, written and customer service skills
