QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Combination - To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.
  • Incumbents at this level meet the entry qualifications as defined by the individual classification. The incumbent may be inexperienced or have limited experience in the specific technical field, but usually possesses the general education, training, license or certification pertinent to the body of knowledge encompassed by the technical specialty. Typically, the incumbent works under direct supervision and is able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the standard principles and terminology associated with the technical specialty, address common problems of limited scope, and demonstrate work-ready communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX-like operating systems, Windows systems and computer networking, including system installation, configuration, debugging, scripting and maintenance. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to relate to users at various skill levels. Patience in dealing with users’ needs and problems. Ability to work independently and accomplish goals within deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience providing system administration/support in a higher-education environment.
  • Experience in deploying and supporting Linux-based HPC environments.
  • Knowledge and experience with Windows and Linux-based servers in an enterprise-wide environment.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Telecommunications, Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field.
Responsibilities

Linux and Windows Computing Support:

  • Provide support for Linux computing systems. Examples of typical work activities include: Assist in maintaining Linux and Windows systems
  • Assist with the install of application software needed for instruction and research
  • Assist with applying campus standards to computing lab computers and ensure the security of computing devices
  • Assist with configuration of lab computers as dual-boot systems with Linux and Windows where needed.

HPC Computing Management:

  • Build and manage HPC computing environments to support a wide range of constituents.
  • Examples of typical work include: Assist in gathering requirements for upgrades and new investments
  • Assist with the installation and configuration of Linux-based servers for computing nodes and head nodes
  • Assist with the installation and configuration of cluster software for the management of cluster nodes
  • Assist with maintaining images of computing nodes to provide for updating and deployment of systems in the HPC environment
  • Assist with evaluation of security for the HPC systems to ensure they meet campus standards
  • Assist with patching of HPC systems
  • Assist with installing and updating application software and libraries
  • Assist in the implementation of new systems and services to support the HPC environments
  • Assist in evaluating, implementing, and daily operations of cloud HPC environments in addition to on-premise
  • Assist with the managed storage and networking systems dedicated to the HPC environments

HPC User Support

  • Work with faculty and students to provide support for the use of the HPC computing environment.
  • Examples of typical work activities include:Responding to faculty and student inquiries on assistance with how to connect and use the HPC systems
  • Respond to reports of user-reported system errors
  • Create and update end-user documentation on connecting to and using the HPC system
  • Provisioning users and classes with access to the HPC system
  • Assist with cross training student support staff to assist with daily operational responsibilities and problem resolution
