At Thorn SDS, we are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology to drive innovation. We are seeking a highly skilled System Operations Engineer with a strong operational mindset to support EUMETSAT in migrating their operational systems to a cloud-based infrastructure.
EUMETSAT operates a number of Earth observation spacecraft and ground stations, and this role plays a critical part in ensuring system monitoring, optimisation, and network resilience.
Based in Darmstadt, Germany, this role requires proficiency in spoken and written English and collaboration with international teams.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in high-availability, mission-critical environments.
  • System operations mindset with a knowledge of cloud infrastructure, or network resilience.
  • Wide / general knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their application in mission-critical environments.
  • Experience with DevOps tools, automation, and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, Terraform, Ansible).
  • Familiarity with system monitoring tools, performance tuning, and proactive issue resolution.
  • Strong understanding of network security, resilience, and best practices in cloud-based operations.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure in a dynamic operational environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary, international team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in satellite operations, ground station networks, or aerospace system monitoring.
  • Knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) and cloud security frameworks.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML applications for predictive maintenance and anomaly detection.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the cloud migration of operational systems, ensuring smooth transition to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
  • Monitor system performance and proactively ensure resilience in network and cloud-based operations.
  • Optimise system operations to improve reliability, efficiency, and security of cloud infrastructure.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring tools to detect and resolve system anomalies.
  • Work closely with software, hardware, and mission operations teams to ensure seamless integration of cloud-based solutions.
  • Develop automation tools and scripts to enhance system performance and streamline operations.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, security, and operational standards in a cloud-based environment.
  • Participate in real-time mission operations, incident response, and contingency planning.
