KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

In this role as System Safety Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct hazard analyses such as HAZOP, FTA, and FMEA to proactively identify risks in naval systems.
  • Ensure compliance with international safety standards, including IEC 61508 and MIL-Std-882E.
  • Develop and implement effective risk mitigation strategies to enhance system safety.
  • Maintain structured and traceable hazard documentation, utilizing an established risk matrix.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate safety requirements seamlessly into system designs.
  • Define and document comprehensive system safety requirements tailored for naval vessels.
  • Function as the primary contact for system safety matters, both internally and with external stakeholders.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through training, awareness programs, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Lead the system safety engineering team, integrating safety processes into standard operations.
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to team members while contributing to performance appraisals and professional development.
  • Drive continuous improvement within the department by refining safety processes.
  • Ensure strict adherence to HSSEQ / IMED policies and procedures.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

We are looking for candidates for the position of System Safety Engineer with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master degree in a relevant technical field.
  • Extensive experience in system safety engineering, ideally within shipbuilding or naval defence.
  • Strong expertise in system safety analysis methodologies and standards such as IEC 61508, MIL-Std-882E, and the Machine Directive.
  • Proven experience leading high-performing teams, with excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems engineering.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Requirements Management Tools.
  • Fluent in Dutch and English; German language skills are a plus.
  • Excellent references, as a security screening is part of the hiring process.
  • Permanent EU citizenship and passport are both required. Candidates with EU (work) visa or with (also) a non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible given the requirements imposed by the military nature of our projects.
