For more information, please visit http://www.gmdefensellc.com The Role This Engineer is responsible for executing System Safety development for GM Defense supporting multiple domains (propulsion, chassis, high voltage, etc.). You'll help develop the GM Defense system safety process, leveraging GM system safety processes and industry standards. You will interact with the GMD product teams to ensure safety requirements are met. Specifically, you will be responsible to lead risk analyses, develop safe solutions, identify/mitigate potential safety issues, and assist program teams to develop systems free from unreasonable risk. What You'll Do Support product engineering team, providing safety process-specific knowledge for out-sourced programs, and in-house advanced development projects. Develop and maintain the system safety plan for the project according to the GM Defense System Safety Engineering Process for assigned projects. Work with the GMD and/or supplier project manager to interlink the safety plan with the project plan. Perform and/or manage the execution of the safety tasks called out in the system safety plan. Work with the GMD and/or supplier project manager to identify resources to execute the safety tasks called out in the plan as needed. Review supplier safety process deliverables and help guide supplier on GMD safety process and safety requirements as required Lead informal team reviews and formal Safety Peer Reviews for safety process work products. Participate in safety strategy design discussions and help ensure that the safety requirements will be adequately met. Assist in resolving conflicts concerning safety requirements within the product engineering team. Escalate unresolved safety related issues and confirm that the issue resolution process has been followed. Support as needed with the System Safety Process Statement of Requirements (SOR) and the Development Interface Agreement with the supplier. Coach product engineering team, providing safety process-specific knowledge, consulting senior safety engineers as needed: Guide on access and usage of templates, training resources, and best practices. Support system safety process development and improvement: Interface with Senior System Safety Engineers, corporate and industry experts to stay current in safety processes, methods, and tools. Document safety best practices implemented by the product team for reuse by other product teams. Identify improvements to safety processes, methods and tools and communicate to the appropriate workgroups within the System Safety GSSLT. Participate in supplier assessments regarding functional safety process capability and performance. Identify improvements needed in the supplier qualification process and GM Supplier interactions. Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) 5+ years engineering or related experience. Bachelor in Engineering, Technology, Applied Physics, or related technical or science disciplines. Strong understanding of major vehicle subsystems. Experience with serial communications between embedded controllers. Experience with systems engineering principles & techniques. Experience with Design Failure Mode Effects & Analysis (DFMEAs) and other analysis tools and techniques. Proficient in qualitative and quantitative Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) process using industry common tools. Areas of expertise include: Testing, Design, Analysis. Ability to work independently, strong in dealing with ambiguity. Strong problem solving skills and ability to think outside the box. This position requires legally operating a motor vehicle daily.
