Solutions for Defense include enterprise and mission IT, large-scale intelligence systems, command and control, geospatial and data analytics, cybersecurity, logistics, training, and intelligence analysis and operations support. Our team is solving the world’s toughest security challenges for customers with “can’t fail” missions.
Leidos Defense Sector is seeking a System Safety Engineer to join our team in Huntsville, AL. The qualified applicant should understand Department of Defense (DoD) or U.S. Army safety standards. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, evaluation, and execution of system safety programs supporting engineering projects across their life cycle. The role emphasizes hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies to ensure compliance with safety requirements and mission assurance objectives.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Safety, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in system safety engineering or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with MIL-STD-882E and its application to system safety programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment to meet deadlines.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
  • Resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to the Huntsville - North Alabama, AL area.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with AR 385-10, AR 385-16, AR 770-3, and AMCOM 385-17.
  • Experience with Systems Engineering and Reliability Engineering processes.
  • Knowledge of Army Safety Board processes and preparation.
  • Experience conducting hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, EHA, HHA, FTA, FMEA).
  • Proficiency with safety tools and databases (e.g., hazard tracking systems, model-based systems engineering, requirement databases).
  • Active DoD security clearance.
At Leidos, we don’t want someone who “fits the mold"—we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, “what’s next?” before the dust settles on “what’s now.”
If you’re already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2… good. You’ll fit right in.
Responsibilities

Support System Safety Analysis tasks in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and customer program requirements. The individual will be expected to:

  • Develop, maintain, and update system safety program documentation (e.g., System Safety Program Plans, Hazard Tracking Systems, Hazard Analyses, Safety Assessment Report)
  • Identify, track, and mitigate safety hazards across system design, development, test and fielding phases
  • Interface with engineering disciplines (systems engineering, reliability, test, quality, design) to ensure safety requirements are fully integrated
  • Participate in safety reviews, technical interchange meetings, and program status briefings
