Description

THE SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR WILL:

  • Develop systems, working as part of a team or individually, to enhance and streamline Brock’s information systems;
  • Review and evaluate solutions for improved functionality including both hardware and software;
  • Analyze and solve problems with complex software applications and server systems, including hardware and operating systems;
  • Manage server systems, including hardware and software for database servers, application servers, file servers, web servers, and e-mail servers;
  • Manage, recommend, and implement strategies for securing all aspects of Brock’s computing resources, including servers, operating systems, firewalls, and authentication;
  • Troubleshoot server problems, working with vendors and outside resources as required;
  • Complete all documentation and work tickets as required to provide a maintenance record for servers.
  • Complete assigned tasks of a project or manage a project independently;
  • Direct assigned resources to meet schedules for project implementation;  
  • Serve as lead analyst/project leader for small projects and enhancements of system solutions, coordinating the work of other team members as required; 
  • Ensure adherence to development policies, procedures, and standards, seeking input and advising others as necessary. 

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree or college diploma in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience;
  • Experience with server environments, including Linux; configuring, monitoring, and maintaining servers in a multi-server environment; and mixed Linux and Windows environments;
  • Project management experience;
  • Ability to integrate emerging technologies into current environment and the ability to analyze complex computer problems and provide solutions;
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant multi-user computer systems, applications, and/or equipment with a strong emphasis on Linux based systems;
  • Ability to install and configure and maintain server hardware and software including database servers, file servers, web servers, etc. in a Linux based environment;
  • Strong understanding of scripting technologies, including, but not limited to: PowerShell, Python, bash, and the ability to automate frequent manual tasks; 
  • Experience with configuration management systems such as, System Centre Configuration Manager, RedHat Satellite, Ansible, etc.
  • Ability to implement computer security directives (patch server, firewalls, etc.);
  • Ability to work with a variety of Database servers (MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL);
  • Knowledge of computer security procedures and protocols particularly related to Linux based environments;
  • Ability to work with users, understanding their needs and using analysis skills to interface their needs into system requirements;
  • Ability to provide written and oral documentation and presentations for proposals, procedures, models and designs for a variety of technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to troubleshoot, resolve incidents and identify issues, working with other IT members or vendors when necessary.

PREFERRED OR ASSET SKILLS:

  • Specific Linux experience with RedHat and/or CentOS, Ubuntu;
  • Experience with Linux desktops integrated into a centrally managed environment;
  • Experience with post-secondary research environments;
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows administration and Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, and Microsoft Sharepoint;
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant network technology and protocols. (DHCP, DNS, 802.1X, Multicast, PXE, Netboot, etc.);
  • Project Management training;
  • Any relevant industry recognized certifications or training.
Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, IT Infrastructure, the Systems Administrator works as part of the infrastructure systems team to design, implement and support technical solutions. The incumbent will manage all servers, recommending and implementing best practices to ensure optimum performance, security and disaster recovery.
