The Role:
Due to the success of our business, we are looking to recruit a Data Platform & Database Engineer. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, administration, governance and continuous improvement of toob’s Microsoft Fabric platform and database estate. The role acts as the technical owner for Microsoft Fabric and database services including Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL / Azure Managed SQL, MySQL and PostgreSQL, ensuring they remain secure, resilient, performant, recoverable and cost-efficient. As toob’s primary database specialist, the role provides hands-on administration, optimisation and operational support, while retaining responsibility for designing and implementing data solutions, integrations and platform improvements aligned with toob’s wider technology architecture and security standards.

As our Data Platform & Database Engineer your key responsibilities will:
- Own the operational health, administration and governance of Microsoft Fabric, including capacity, workspaces, security, monitoring, performance and lifecycle management.
- Administer and maintain toob’s database estate across Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL / Azure Managed SQL, MySQL and PostgreSQL, applying consistent operational standards.
- Own database lifecycle management including provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance, decommissioning and technical debt management.
- Own backup, recovery and resilience arrangements for database services, including backup monitoring, restore testing and appropriate RPO/RTO controls.
- Monitor, tune and optimise Fabric and database services, proactively managing performance, capacity, resource utilisation, reliability and cloud cost.
- Operate and maintain data pipelines and integrations, troubleshooting failures and ensuring reliable movement of data between systems and Fabric workloads.
- Own operational data-platform governance including access controls, privileged access, auditing, retention, security configuration, documentation and technical standards.
- Support incident, problem and change management for the data platform and database estate, undertaking root-cause analysis and implementing preventative improvements.
- Automate repeatable operational activities and maintain accurate inventories, dependencies, recovery procedures, configuration records and operational runbooks.
- Design and implement new data solutions, integrations and platform improvements where required, ensuring they are scalable, secure, supportable and aligned with toob’s architecture.
- Act as the subject matter expert for database and data-platform technologies, supporting security/compliance requirements and providing out-of-hours support where required.
What you’ll bring to toob:
Microsoft Fabric & Data Platform Operations
- Hands-on experience operating and administering Microsoft Fabric or comparable enterprise cloud data platforms.
- Experience with Fabric capacities, workspaces, OneLake, Lakehouse/Warehouse, pipelines, monitoring, security and deployment/lifecycle management.
- Experience maintaining data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes, with the ability to troubleshoot operational failures and performance issues.
- Solid understanding of data modelling, schema design, data quality and platform governance principles.
Database Administration & Cloud Platforms
- Strong hands-on DBA experience across a mixed estate, with deep Microsoft SQL Server / Azure SQL knowledge and working knowledge of MySQL and PostgreSQL.
- Practical experience with performance tuning, indexing, execution plans, backup/restore, recovery, high availability, patching, upgrades and capacity management.
- Experience with database security, permissions, encryption, auditing, monitoring and alerting across on-premises and cloud database services.
- Understanding of Azure/Fabric capacity and cloud cost management, optimisation and operational automation.
Architecture, Integration & Engineering
- Ability to design and implement secure, scalable and supportable data solutions, integrations and platform improvements when required.
- Ability to support BI and analytics platforms, including Power BI, without direct ownership of business reporting or insight production.
Security & Governance
- Strong awareness of data security principles, privileged access, encryption, auditing, vulnerability management, retention and recovery controls.
- Experience working in a professional, ISO 27001 / Cyber Essentials aligned and regulated environment.
- Ability to implement operational governance that improves data quality, consistency, compliance, auditability and service ownership.
Collaboration, Communication & Technical Ownership
- Strong stakeholder management skills, able to work effectively across IT, development, BI and business teams.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including clear technical documentation, standards and operational runbooks.
- Strong ownership, judgement and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance operational stability with continuous improvement.
Must have technical / professional qualifications:
- Degree BSc or MSc, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- Relevant Microsoft certifications in Fabric, Azure Data Engineering or Azure Database Administration are highly desirable.
- Proven hands-on experience operating Microsoft Fabric and administering cloud and on-premises database technologies.
- Strong practical experience with Microsoft SQL Server / Azure SQL; operational experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL is highly desirable.
