Description

Systems administration for an award-winning Australian manufacturer

Elexon is a Brisbane-based innovation company specialising in the design, development and manufacture of electronic products for local and export markets. From our Brendale site the group builds mining instruments deployed on every continent except Antarctica, alongside high-tech electronics for original equipment manufacturers. The IT environment supporting that operation has to be reliable, secure and current.

About the role

The IT Systems Administrator reports to the IT Systems Manager and works alongside the helpdesk team, maintaining and monitoring ICT systems across the group: servers, network, endpoints and backups.

Infrastructure and cyber security are shared with the IT Systems Manager rather than held by one person, and the split can adjust to your strengths over time.

Automation is central to the role. Elexon is applying AI to its systems and processes to remove low-value, high-volume work, and building that pipeline is an early priority for this position.

The role is site-based at Brendale, with working from home available by negotiation. Server patching runs Thursday evenings, and your hours flex around it rather than stack on top of a full day. Schedule flexibility here is backed by management rather than merely permitted, and applies to the working week generally, not only to patching nights. Beyond patching, after-hours work is planned project work such as cutovers and upgrades, which came up once or twice over the past six months. The role is also on call for emergencies, shared with the IT Systems Manager.

Responsibilities

• Maintain Windows Server, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID environments, including Group Policy and PowerShell automation

• Administer Windows and Linux servers across the virtualised estate

• Manage corporate backup schedules, storage and monitoring

• Manage endpoints through Microsoft Intune: compliance, configuration and application deployment

• Manage and optimise network infrastructure — firewalls, switching, wireless, monitoring, and site-to-site and remote-access VPNs

• Administer the corporate telephony platform

• Patch servers, network devices and the desktop fleet to maintain security currency

• Identify and remediate vulnerabilities alongside the IT Systems Manager

• Build the pipeline of automation opportunities for low-value, high-volume tasks

• Assess and recommend ICT solutions aligned to business objectives

• Document architecture, changes and processes, and maintain policies for system use, administration and disaster recovery

• Provide advanced technical support to end users and to Level 1 and Level 2 staff, supporting SLAs and KPIs through our ITIL management system

Essential experience

• 5+ years managing Microsoft Server 2022/2025 domains, Group Policy and security

• 5+ years administering Microsoft 365 and Entra ID

• 5+ years with virtualisation technologies, including VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox

• 3+ years with Microsoft Intune

• 3+ years across Windows and Linux operating systems (Debian preferred)

• Demonstrated experience administering production network infrastructure: firewall policy, VLANs and segmentation, routing, and site-to-site and remote-access VPNs (IPSec, WireGuard or OpenVPN)

• Sound understanding of the OSI model and strong troubleshooting ability

• Team-oriented, with experience training and upskilling others

• Full working rights in Australia. Australian citizenship is preferred, and appointment is subject to a national police check
