Job Description
We are currently hiring a Systems Design Intern for a summer term position, from September 2025 – April 2026 or August 2026 (8 or 12 months) at our Hitachi Rail office in Toronto.
Hitachi Rail provides signaling systems for metros and light rail systems. Our solutions provide efficient, safe, and green transportation solutions for people around the world.
As a Systems Design Intern, you will support the system engineering team for process and data collection and participate in design.
This safety critical industry provides challenging and rewarding work. The Systems Department is responsible to design the signaling solution based on the customer needs and the features provided by our product. The department is responsible for communicating this design to all stakeholders and ensuring that the design is understood and developed accordingly. The work environment is fast-paced and challenging as it involves working with customers, operators, and other suppliers to understand the full signaling solution and how the solution interacts with other systems in the transportation system. In addition, the design must meet all the safety, performance, functional and operational requirements. The team is also responsible for supporting the development and testing activities.
The incumbent is accountable for performing the design work correctly, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages.
The work is typically defined by the Work Package Manager, then reviewed and approved by the Systems Architect and/or Manager. The System Engineer typically works with a team of engineers to define what will be designed, how it will perform and how it will be determined that it is working correctly.
