MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in computer system development and modification. Relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Advanced understanding of IT infrastructure design, monitoring, testing, and maintenance, including physical and virtual server environments. Proficiency in computer and server hardware, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V), cloud services (e.g., Microsoft Azure, Entra ID), and scripting tools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft, CompTIA, VMware) are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is seeking a Systems Engineer in the Information Technology Department. The position plays a key part in delivering reliable technology services to students, faculty, and staff, while aligning with institutional goals and compliance requirements. In addition, this role is responsible for the following:

  • Maintain/monitor storage both physical and virtual server infrastructure supporting academic and administrative systems; to include managing hypervisors (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) to ensure optimal performance, availability, and resource allocation across virtual environments. Responsibilities also include patching, backups, Disaster Recovery, and performance tuning of critical systems.
  • Lead and/or support IT projects (system migrations, hardware refreshes, and software deployments).
  • Collaborate with academic departments and administrative units to align technology solutions with institutional goals.
  • Administers Microsoft Azure, Entra ID, and other cloud-based services.
  • Manages identity and access for students, faculty, and staff, including Single Sign-On (SSO) and Microsoft 365.
  • Implement and maintain security protocols, manage access controls, and ensure compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and other higher ed regulations. Monitor systems for vulnerabilities and respond to incidents.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource for resolving complex issues escalated from help desk or departmental IT staff. Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members and collaborate across IT units.
